Oral Hygine Instructions
It will be most important for you to take good care of your teeth while wearing braces. We will instruct you on good oral hygiene and bring to your attention during treatment any areas that you are neglecting. You should brush your teeth after every meal and every night right before you go to bed. Pay special attention to brushing the area between the band and the gum. (Be sure to massage the gum and clean "The Ledge"...this is where the trouble starts.) The braces do not cause decay. In fact, they protect the covered part of the tooth as long as the cement holds. They do give extra places for the food and bacteria to hide, so brush thoroughly. In order to maintain good dental health, please continue to see your general dentist for check-ups and cleaning on a regular six-month basis.
How To Brush
- Use a soft toothbrush.
- Begin by brushing the outside surfaces of the teeth by placing the toothbrush at the gum line and move in a slow, circular motion. Brush all around the braces.
- Brush the inside of the teeth with the same scrubbing motion.
- Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth because plaque forms there too.
- Brush the biting surfaces of your teeth.
- Look closely in the mirror to be sure that all of your teeth and braces are clean and sparkle.
- It is highly recommended that you floss your teeth daily. Brushing helps to control pain and soreness as well as helping the teeth to move faster.
